New Year's Eve is when old stories stop working and new stories begin again.
I have said this line before, many times: "This year will be different. This year I do it. I fix it. I change it."
And most years, nothing changed, because things do not change until they do.
You are busy. You are tired. You are doing your best. You are trying.
God knows you try.
But you keep the same habits, so you keep the same stress. You keep the same people around, so you keep hearing the same problems.
This time of year can be hard for high achievers. Especially when you are trying to move from 90% to 95%. That last stretch is brutal because total optimization is hard. Even for smart, capable people.
A new year does not fix old patterns. People are not stuck because they are lazy or confused. They are stuck because avoiding the obvious feels safer than dealing with it.
We know who drains us. We know what is not working.
The question is whether we create the boundary or keep absorbing the cost.
You do not need a tomorrow strategy for a today problem.
You can stop.
You can stop saying yes when you mean no. You can stop carrying pain that is not yours. You can stop waiting for the "right time" to be honest.
Things do not get easier right away — but they get clearer. And when things get clearer, the math gets interesting.
Say the thing. That might free up 5%. Set expectations early. That might give you another 10%. What could you do with 15% more of yourself?
Listen — you already know what needs to end. You already know what you cannot bring with you. You have known for a while.
Now, the question is whether you forgive yourself — or others — for holding it so long, thank it for the lesson, and let it go.
Not tonight. Right now.
The new year does not need a "new" version of you. It needs the real one. The brave one.
You do not need a ball to drop for that.
