Being a Lighthouse

4 min read

It's a well-known fact that my biggest problems with my work are: procrastination and completion. When those two go hand-in-hand, they are vicious to overcome and it's a battle I'm pretty sure I am going to fight for the rest of my life.

The Absolute Defense to Slacking

Every time I actually do the work, though, I feel like I'm chipping away at the issues that plague me. It's so surprisingly simple that it's hard to believe.

Working actually works!

I knew that this website would either be my largest success, or my truest, most undeniable failure. I didn't take putting my name on this site lying down.

It meant something, like a promise, or a bond.

For all of those reasons, and then some, I consider this site to be a lighthouse. It's not the biggest or brightest of all the websites talking about art and putting work in, but I knew that certain kinds of people: the lost writer/blogger, the scared artist, the confused poet, the failed marketer, the successful doctor, etc. would see my light in the distance and head toward it.

I wasn't sure why, and I definitely had no reason to believe these people would actually find me, but they did.

We found each other, and we connected, through words. And because of my loyalty to words, I'm still here; hoping new artists find me and use their own inner light to lead me to promising, new lands.

Light houses are what you go towards when you are lost. Communities are what you build when you are found.

There is a difference.
